Saturday Shoutout!!! Sydney, Learning and The HR Archit3ct

Saturday Shoutout!!! The 6 “C’s” of  the Tonkin Learning and Development Conference

Issue 2 | Number 8 | 30 June 2012

Another year, another Tonkin’s Learning and Development Conference has ended. As the Co-Chairperson for the Conference, it was an amazing three days and I’m still digesting all the great ideas I heard from great people. Also another chance to indulge in my weekly post-conference pastime, looking back and trying to tease out key themes and takeaways.

 ‘Aha’ Moments

From the conference I pinpointed 6 key themes in learning and development strategies being used to develop and engage employees –

1. A well planned learning and development agenda is the platform to bring about organisational change (behavioural and attitudinal)

2. Culture influences the learning and development professional approach in designing, developing and implementing learning initiatives

3. Developing a continuous learning environment does not rely on a single learning approach but a blended learning approach.

4. Communication and collaboration through internal and external networks increases engagement for learning and development in an organisation

5. Tracking the actual costs and benefits of learning and development programs to business results can be mapped through a Return on Investment strategy.

6. Organisations with the excellent use of capabilities are 4 times are more likely to have a performance driven culture

On a finishing note, I so enjoyed the chance to reconnect with previous friends, make a few new ones, and go face-to-face with several people I’d only known “virtually” before.  Special shoutouts!!! to Chip Graf (Fujistu Australia) and Tim Leggett (Learning Seat).

And of course it was a cool to present with fellow colleagues Robert Wilkins (Aussie Home Loans), John Timson (Accor Hotels) and Julia Palmer (Business networking Academy).

Conclusion

The learning and development conference was very thought provoking and provided participants with exposure to current thoughts and ideas from leading Australian companies (private and public). The conference was the platform from which learning and development professionals can drive their learning agenda and contribute to business results.  Another great conference!
